Unlocking the Mystery of GC Inlets
Conducted by Joseph M. Levy
Part I
May 16, 2007
Part II
May 30, 2007
Do you really
know how GC inlets work?
Did you know that most problems begin in the GC inlet?
Did you know that you can make a GC injection and not have a solvent peak?
Can you effectively diagnose a problem with your GC just by looking at your
chromatogram?
These are important
questions that can really impact the way we do GC when we find out the
answers! This series of seminars will provide these answers and give you
insight into the operational and practical background behind some of the
best kept secrets in the world of GC.
The sessions will cover
the practical aspects and issues of the most common forms of GC injection;
split and delayed split for capillary columns and direct
injections for packed columns. The discussions will also focus on the
less known form of GC injection into programmable temperature vaporizing
(PTV) inlets. Moreover, headspace sampling will be presented as
a selective and sensitive form of injection of a tremendous variety of
liquid and solid samples into GC.
Session One (Part I)
will focus on the most common forms of GC injection into
capillary columns for liquids: split and delayed split injection.
This will include theory of operation, typical pitfalls and preventative
maintenance with troubleshooting. Discussion will also focus on proper
injection geometry to maintain quantitative and precise injections of
nonpolar and polar solvent based mixtures.
Session Two (Part II)
will focus a discussion on GC inlets with a less common type
of injection into capillary columns for liquids, namely for PTV
(programmable temperature vaporizing) inlets. Moreover, the focus
will also be on the injection of gases into GC packed and capillary columns
using direct packed column inlets and headspace sampling. This
will include theory of operation, typical pitfalls and preventative
maintenance with troubleshooting.
The instructor for these audio seminars
is Joseph M. Levy, PhD.
He has over 27 years as a practicing gas
chromatographer, analytical chemist and trainer, and has lectured all over
the world with training seminars, workshops and invited presentations.
