How to Reduce
Integration Errors in
Chromatographic Analysis:
When Peaks are of Approximately Equal Size
Conducted by Merlin
K. L. Bicking, Ph.D.
September 21, 2007
Are your
chromatographic results different than you expect? Do you suspect that one
problem might be caused by peak integration errors? Are you unsure about
which integration method to use?
You are not alone!
These questions have plagued chromatographers for many years, and while
modern integration systems can give us many options, they don’t offer any
advice on which option works best in a particular situation. This seminar
will provide some of the answers to your questions. Based on recent
integration research, this presentation will discuss how to minimize
integration errors when two peaks are of approximately equal size (i.e., one
peak is at least five percent of the other peak).
We will briefly discuss
how integrators work, and how to set up your data collection system so that
you have enough peak information to produce accurate results. After a
review of basic resolution concepts, we will outline the most popular
integration options (drop, valley, and skim). Integration errors resulting
from the use of each integration option will then be presented for a variety
of peak size ratios, when the smaller peak is either before or after the
larger peak, at resolutions values ranging from 1.0 to 2.0. Finally, the
sources of these integration errors will be discussed from a chromatographic
perspective.
This seminar will be
conducted on the telephone and is presented by Dr. Merlin K. L. Bicking,
worldwide expert on liquid chromatography. In this unique seminar
format, lasting just one hour, you will be able to follow along with a
PowerPoint presentation and ask questions and interact with Dr. Bicking
during the seminar.
A detailed
outline and Dr. Bicking’s qualifications follow below.
